How to track and understand changes to internal links and site structure
Learn how to document internal links, anchor text, menus, navigation, and hierarchy without treating link counts as proof of quality.

Internal links connect the pages of a website. They guide visitors, expose relationships between topics, and give crawlers paths for discovery. Because links often come from menus, templates, content editors, and plugins, their changes can be difficult to reconstruct after the fact.

- What is the target URL?
- Was the link added, removed, or relabeled?

- Does the target return the expected status and canonical?
- Can important pages still be reached through understandable navigation?
- Is the change expected after a migration or redesign?
Source limitations and attribution
A public crawler can observe rendered links at a particular time. It usually cannot prove which person changed a menu or whether a plugin generated the link. WordPress evidence can add supported administrative events, but attribution should remain unconfirmed unless the sources establish it.
Coverage matters. If only part of the site was scanned, report relationships within that scope. Do not estimate missing link counts or invent a complete graph.
Use links as evidence, not a quality score
